Moved to a new apartment, no cable looking for decent OTA antenna, HD noob here :(

I live in los Angeles, i lived in student housing which provided free cable, now i need to pay for my own. I want to buy an HD antenna for my 46 in samsung LCD, my address is 600 kinston ave, culver city 90230.

I live in a 2 story apartment building, its a small 4 plex building I'm on the bottom floor, i bought Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified High-Definition Antenna for Off-Air HDTV Reception
but it didnt work for squat. Can someone suggest a medium range antenna I can put indoors like on the top shell of my closet? I'm not very tech savy and I have a disability so getting on the roof and running wires is something that may be difficult for me to do.

Thanks for your advise.

Sundance Channel dropped from Dish

Am I the only one who's noticed? Mostly I've been able to roll with the capricious comings and goings of channels at Dish but this one really irritates me. I've been a faithful Dish customer for a little over 10 years now but this relationship is very close to ending. I know there are price conflicts between Dish and the AMC network which could result in ALL those AMC-related channels disappearing but it doesn't make sense to me that Dish would drop just one of those channels citing "low viewership." I'll bet there are a LOT of niche channels with even lower viewership that don't seem to be in any danger. What gives here?

Pioneer Elite 520HD

So i got a new to me Pioneer Elite 520HD I was just wanting to get some info on this TV. I picked this tv up for the spare room I got it off CL for free. The guy just bought a flat panel. He said its been professionally taken care of and a new Light/tube put in 6 months ago. Im having a hard time finding manuals, or any decent reviews. Since the tv was made back in 2002. I just wondered if anyone knew anything about this TV. I know being an Elite it was a high dollar unit but not sure of much more than that

Did DISH ever get MSG back

Does DISH now carry MSG and MSG plus in SD, or not at all. I would add the sports package for MSG plus, but I can't find a list of channels in the sports package anywhere. MSG plus is now the only channel outside of New York that carries Belmont etc. replay show.

Also, does anyone know if any other channels in the sports package carry thoroughbred replay shows?

Explorer 8300HD and external hard drive

I've read some of the old posts about this topic but it seems no one, including Cox (Phoenix, AZ), is willing or able to give me a straight answer. I have the referenced DVR and want more storage space. I am running Passport ECHO version 3.1.085 and PowerTV version 6.14.98.1sp. Cox tells me that I should be able to use eSATA but they won't recommend any particular brand and they won't give tech support. I'm not into building an external hard drive. What I want to do is go to Best Buy, buy a 1TB external drive, and hook it up. So, what I want to know is what are my chances of this working? If there's a good chance that it will work is there any particular brand I should get and any specs that I should look for? My other alternative is to swap my current box for an updated version with more storage but then I will lose any currently recorded programs. Any help is appreciated.
Explorer 8300HD and external hard drive

Buying my first TV so a little help is needed.

1. Seating distance
From 9' to 11'. I have no placment limitations. Looking at 46" to 48".

2. What TV will it be replacing
This is my first TV. Until now i have watched everything on my 22" monitor.

3. What will you be watching on it
The only device that will be connected to TV is my PC (trough HDMI). I will be using my TV only for watching movies and series. I will not watch sports, play games or to be more exact i will not connect my TV with cable TV or inernet TV.

I will mainly be watching HD material (Full Blu-Rays, 1080p encodes). I watch SD material (DVD9 sources) only when series/movies don't exist in HD.

HD - 70%
SD - 30%

4. Will a computer be connected to use the display as a monitor?
No. I will still use my monitor for work on PC.

5. Will you be getting a Blu-ray player to watch movies and will you be getting any HD service from cable/sat, or will you just be watching SD programming, and an upscaling SD DVD player?
I won't be getting Blu-ray player or any HD service from cable/sat. The only device that will be connected to TV is my PC (trough HDMI). I will be using my TV only for watching movies and series. I will not watch sports, won't play games or to be more exact i will not connect my TV with cable TV or inernet TV.

6. Are you looking for the best in class display, the best bargain display, or best bang for the buck in the middle display?
I would like as good as possible PQ.

7. Are you interested in seeing 3D with the new 3DTVs? If not, what about next year since TVs are usually kept for many years so consider that?
I'm not interested in 3D.

8. What is the room lighting situation?
I would say "almost dark". There is no b

9. What is your budget range?
I'm willing to spend around 900€ = 1 130$

10. Will people be watching at multiple viewing angles or just usually one person sitting directly in the center?
It will be just me sitting directly in the center.

11. When will most viewing be done on the display
From 4PM- 3AM.

Additional factors
- Very important to me is 1080p/24 or 24p compatibility!
- Best PQ possiable.
- Preferably i would like to have LCD Full LED (if possible).

- I don't care about 3D so this is an important factor.
- Since i'm from Europe i can't use and don't need "Internet streaming services" like Netflix and Hulu.
- I also don't need services like Pandora, Rhapsody, Picasa, Flickr, access to Facebook, Twitter, and even Skype.

2AM, almost spit my coffee at my screen...

Girlfriend bought Tera, and we're all playing it and I can hear my GPU fans cranking up. It's also hot here, one of the few real hot days, ambient probably in the +80Fs.

Anyways, my GPU temps are in the 70s C+, which I don't like - ever, so I decide to do a little work, and I come across this thread:

http://tera-forums.enmasse.com/forum...-Screen?page=5

People are absolutely fucking insane. I swear. The guy who made the thread is wrong, the guy correcting him is right, and in the end people side with the wrong guy because the right guy is a total dick.

And after being seriously educated on how these things work by someone more civil the original poster goes on more stupid shit he clearly doesn't know a fucking thing about. I like how he lists his PC, and how that is suppose to make his stupid viewpoint anymore right.

Fucking people.

...

Sort of annoyed right now, but, yeah...

I'm sure it's the elevated ambient temps right now causing my issue, clearly my stock fans need some help. :D Someone is going to Microcenter...nah, eff it I want these:

Getting strange interference on my TV from PC.

Hey guys, I just bought this used POS P4 system that I've got hooked to my living room Plasma.

I'm getting this weird interference or something on the picture that I've never seen before in years of hooking PCs to TVs...
I don't know if this image will help at all, but this is what it's doing as best as I could photograph.

It has these wavy bars of interference that aren't rolling, but are slightly moving/twitching, and run the full width&height of the screen.

I'm just trying to get some work done ATM, so PQ isn't my biggest concern; my worry is that I could damage the TV...
Any opinions on whether or not I should worry about that, or what could be causing this?

The PC has a shitty onboard Vcard ATM (new one should be here tomorrow), so I'm wondering if that's involved?
I've hooked via VGA cable, and I'm currently running at 1080p, but it is there in any res.

I need some suggestions here since this is a very difficult situation. We are going to move into my father-in-law's house to take care of him. He's 90 years old & failing. Now he has cablevision which is DEAD!!!, gone, outta there!!! Is it easier to close my account with Verizon & open a new account under HIS name?? I will need 1 DVR & 2 STB's. If I move my account, I will move my DVR & 1 STB over there & get one more STB. Thoughts & suggestion, please. Thanks.

Problem connecting samsung tv to pc

So I thought his would be pretty easy set up but i was wrong. I have my computer attached to my monitor via vga cable. I tried connecting my samsung hdtv via hdmi cable to my monitor but the samsung doesn't even recognize that there is anything connected to the hdmi input. I even tried connecting the vga directly to the tv and it say its the wrong input data. I tried the av cables an that didnt work either.
I have an ATI radeon 3100 graphics card with the updated drivers and i am running windows 7.
I even tried connecting another smaller tv to my computer bypassing the monitor and connecting samsung to that tv but that didnt work either.

Im stumped. Your help is appreciated :)

HR34 - hitting PREV causes signal loss (handshake issue?)

I'm absolutely loving DirecTV so far (first timer here). Everything seems to be going great so far, except for two issues that I can't seem to resolve.

These questions relate to an HR34 receiver I had installed for me on May 19, 2012. (I also had two H25s set up in two other locations in my home.)

First: When I hit the 'PREV' button on my remote, I get a strange result. Immediately after hitting the button, the screen turns black and I hear the audio from the new channel/tuner. Then the audio cuts out, the screen flickers (multicolored lines on top half of screen), then the screen seems to lose input altogether and shows the "input" number for my TV in the top corner (as if I just changed the input on the TV remote), and then finally switches to the channel/tuner. The whole process takes 6-7 seconds. This does not happen on my H25 receivers at all. On the H25, I press 'PREV' and the channel changes in 1 second. On the HR34, sometimes I get the lag/handshake issue when I simply change the channel by locating one on the guide and pressing 'select.' I tried switching HDMI cables to the best I own, and that doesn't make a difference. Is this normal?

Second: When scrolling through the guide, I have minor lag. If I'm paging down, sometimes its moves as fast as I can press. But, sometimes, it hangs. Same with other button presses. On the other hand, the H25s fly as fast as I can press the button -- they never lag. Is this normal? I read in another thread that an update in late March reduced lag. Do I need to update the software/firmware?

HDMI question

Hey, I was recently shopping around for HDMI to VGA convertors, and I found a few. I found one on Amazon for 32$, and I am considering purchasing it.
I plan on inputting my Xbox360 HDMI and having VGA output, so I can hook it up with my LCD display. Now, I currently hook up Component video (Red, white, yellow) to my TV, and the quality sucks. If I were to convert HDMI to VGA, and display it onto my 1080p LCD display, what would the quality be like? Would it be better or the same?

Thanks :)

Roku2 & Netflix 5.1 issue

The problem with this one is whenever dd5.1 is enabled on Netflix, the display turns roku magenta/cyan. CC only, no problem. 2 channel stereo, ditto.

I have tried two quality hdmi cables and the problem only occurs with the Roku.

DD 5.1 or others work perfectly with all other sources.

I contacted Roku on the 12th., again by chat on the 14th (long chat. We reset everything and even removed/re-installed Netflix.

The chat desk person, while friendly, was unable to come up with any answers even after, she said, she had spoken to Netflix.

I've a ticket into support from the 12th as I said but have not heard a word from Roku since.

Anyone else had this issue?
Any results?
Is it normal for Roku to take days to respond?

Thanks all,

Denon 2930 receiver problem - loud clicks/bangs on speakers

I've been using the Denon 2930 receiver happily for about four years with no problems. Today, however, while I was playing the Lionsgate BD of "Ran" (Kurosawa), there were about four occasions when there were sudden very loud clicks (perhaps "bangs" would be a better term) on my front speakers. They were loud enough to startle me and I was concerned in case there had been any damage to the speakers, but they seem to be OK.

FYI, I use HDMI leads from the (Panasonic) BD player to the receiver and from the receiver to the TV. I have a 5.1 speaker configuration, and I was playing the DTS HDMA 5.1 track (although there is no rear channel activity on this particular disc, so the problem only affected the front speakers). These episodes all occurred during loud action sequences involving gunshots, etc. However, I didn't have the volume turned up beyond my normal setting - it was set at -6 Db.

I'm a bit wary about playing the disc again, but I might try using the DTS HDMA 2.0 track next time to see if the problem occurs with that. I've played the disc previously without any problem, so I'm assuming it's an equipment problem, and the most likely culprit appears to be the receiver.

Can anyone suggest a possible cause? I'd be very grateful for any thoughts or suggestions. :)

Dead Pixel on New Panasonic Plasma TV

I've owned the Panasonic TC-P50X3 for a little over 3 months now and have had no problems. I even think they slipped in a 1080p feature at the last minute as I'm able to get 1080p with certain movies on DirecTV and everything on Xbox 360 (can anyone confirm this btw?)

However, I just recently discovered a small green dot on the screen that I believe is a dead pixel. It goes away when the screen turns dark, but comes back whenever there's color on the picture. It happens on every input. Don't know why this would happen 3 months into usage. I even made it a point to turn down the contrast by 20% with all my settings before using to try and prevent stuff like this.

Does anyone know what Panasonic's warranty policy is on this? I called them and they told me to e-mail them a picture of the problem. At this point it looks like though they may try and ignore me. Is there any way to fix this on my own? I read something about a DVD program out there that runs at about $30 that you can use to fix problems such as this one. Thanks for any advice.

How to tell which recorded shows we've already watched?

New to Uverse after 14 yrs of DirecTV. So far so good. Finding some things that (of course) I miss... hopefully this isn't one of them. When looking at the recorded shows list on my DVR, how can I tell which ones I've already watched? We just returned from vacation, and want to watch the new shows, but can't tell which we've already watched without going to each one, and trying to tell by the description of the show. In DTV, it was "grey" when we've already accessed it. Is there a visual "marker" on Uverse list of shows that I'm just missing? Of course, I can delete the ones that I watch as I watch them, but sometimes I want to keep them for my wife, so that's not an option. I searched thru the old messages, and didn't find this subject.

Regards,
Steve H

Surround Sound with Dish

I have a Sony STR DH700 7.1 receiver that I am connecting to a Dish Receiver and to my Sharp Aquos TV. I'm running an HDMI cable from the TV to the "TV Out" on the Sony receiver and an HDMI cable from the "TV Sat" on the Sony receiver to the Dish receiver. The problem is, I have surround sound through my speakers but it's not what I am seeing on my TV - It's a different channel entirely. I had it hooked up the same way with another TV and it worked fine, the problem came with the new TV. I would appreciate and help!

Redbox Analyst Day - 38.6 M users +17.6% YoY 38,000 kiosks, more Blu-ray & movie tix?

Quote: Redbox Eying Movie Ticket Sales?

17 May, 2012
By: Erik Gruenwedel

Kiosk vendor adding 2,400 combined locations at CVS, Dollar General, Family Dollar convenience stores in 2012, including 35% locations with dual kiosks

Redbox could include movie tickets as it ups entertainment offerings (including expanded Blu-ray Disc title selections) at its national footprint of more than 38,000 rental kiosks, according to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

Pachter concluded as much following Redbox parent Coinstar’s May 16 analyst day where Gregg Kaplan, president and COO of Redbox, outlined four growth areas he believes the kiosk business is dependent upon: new business (movie tickets?), digital strategy with Verizon, assimilation of Blockbuster Express locations and expansion into Canada.

Though much of the presentation previously was disclosed May 9 by Coinstar CFO Scott Di Valerio at a separate investor event, it underscored the fact that Redbox believes the kiosk rental business has significant growth opportunities ahead.

“We believe that Coinstar intends to sell movie tickets through Redbox kiosks, helping its studio partners to drive higher-margin theatrical exhibition sales, while driving awareness of films that will ultimately come to [disc],” Pachter wrote in a May 17 note.

While the analyst day presentation provided scant new specifics regarding the February-announced digital joint venture with Verizon, Redbox disclosed it would get 35% of the net profit in the partnership, including being paid a fee for each disc rental generated by the subscription program.

An exact launch date of the subscription program, including pricing and content selection, was not revealed, although Coinstar expects the joint venture to be unprofitable in the near term as it ramps up operations.

“We are encouraged that Coinstar limited its exposure by requiring the [joint venture] to pay it for [discs] rented, suggesting that the company will not lose money over the long run,” Pachter wrote.

Redbox believes there are up to 2,500 kiosk locations in Canada, including Walmart Canada and Couche-Tard convenience stores. It says Canada represents the third-largest disc rental market in the world, with $23.09 in annual movie rental spending per capita, compared with $19.82 per capita movie rental spending in the United States.

At a separate investor event, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said the appeal of Redbox to the digital joint venture was its expansive customer base and robust website — the latter attracting 11.3 million unique visitors monthly.

“It is really meant for launch across the U.S. for the Redbox population and its 30 million customers,” Shammo told investors at the 40th annual J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media and Telecom confab in Boston. “We are going to integrate all that together and bring packages for both streaming and DVD.”

Indeed, Redbox had 38.6 million customers in the first quarter (ended March 31), up 5.8 million users (17.6%) from 32.8 million users during the same period in 2011.

Redbox said it saw a 5% increase in first-quarter Friday night rentals following promotional enhancements to the website and targeted emails to its 22 million registered users. Redbox claims to have 39 million customer email addresses.

With closure of Redbox’s $100 million acquisition of Blockbuster Express business from NCR Corp. occurring next month, Pachter expects the kiosk vendor to install 5,000 Redbox units in the previous 10,000 Express locations. Notable Express locations include Safeway, Food Lion and Publix. Meanwhile, Redbox and Express kiosks apparently are incompatible — a reality Di Valerio hinted at when he said many of the Express kiosks might be repurposed for expansion opportunities in Europe.

Redbox suggested assimilation of the Express business would initially be dilutive — representing a possible negative hit to forward guidance, according to B. Riley & Co. analyst Eric Wold.

“We are still positive on the acquisition and believe it will generate a boost to profitability in 2013, brings key retail partners into the fold and provides kiosks that can be used to seed international markets,” Wold wrote in a May 17 note.

Sony FD Trinitron Wega component problem

I recently was given a 40" Sony TV(KV-40XBR700) from my father. It has (2) component inputs for HD viewing. Also, I have Comcast as my cable provider with their newest HD/DVR. I bought new component cables and when i hooked them up the picture was a mess. I had somewhat of a picture but yet it was scrambled. My question, could this be a compatibility issue or is there something wrong with the component hook up in my TV??

38 Studios Possibly in Financial Trouble

Kingdoms of Amalur developer 38 Studios may be in financial trouble, according to a news report by Turn to 10.

Quote: State officials have been meeting with the video game company owned by former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, Gov. Lincoln Chafee told NBC 10 on Monday.

"We're always working to keep Rhode Island companies solvent, and that's what we're doing with 38 Studios," Chafee said.

Providence-based 38 Studios was founded in Massachusetts but lured to Rhode Island in 2010 after state officials offered it a $75-million loan guarantee. The state said its backing would help the company bring hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars of tax revenue to the state.

"We're working with 38 Studios on different issues. That's all I can report right now," the governor said.
Calls placed to 38 Studios on Monday were not returned.

Many Netflix movies no longer in HD

Has anyone noticed that a large number of movies that were available in HD can now be streamed only in SD? I noticed the HD symbol missing from them when I was looking through my queue the other day. Many are older titles, but there are newer ones as well, like "Rango", "The Conspirators", and "True Grit" (new version). Anyone know what's going on?

Completely lost when it comes to TV's. Dynex?

Sorry about the spaces in the links in advance, I can't post links with a new account so I had no other option.

So, I'm looking to finally upgrade my tube TV but I have NO idea what I should get. I've been looking around, and I've found (insigniaproducts. com/products/televisions/NS-46L240A13.html) at Best Buy which didn't seem that bad of a deal at $449.99. I still got scared off by the Dynex brand, and thought I'd get some help from someone that isn't trying to push something on me.

I also saw (newegg. com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889112056) on NewEgg, but I've never heard of the brand and I'm scared of the replacement only return policy on the item.

What I'm looking for is something that is crisp, bright, and has a nice refresh rate that is under $550, or something close to it. I'm gonna be playing alot of games on it, and watching hd movies. I'm not really sure what I should be looking for. I would prefer a 46" so I know my options aren't really that great, but if anyone could help me out at all it would be really appreciated, as I'm quite lost and at the hands of a salesman right now. :/ Also, I have a Costco membership if that opens any options up, but I didn't really see anything within my budget on their site.

Thanks :)

EDIT: Speakers are also not much of an issue, as I will be hooking it up to a surround sound system.

Setup for camper

We have our camper setup most of the summer along the river and use it on the weekends. We would like to get setup with the Dish Network pay-as-you-go monthly plan. We want to try to setup as inexpensive as possible, but have a good system.
I already have a dish500 antenna that someone gave me, so I don't need to buy an antenna or the tailgater. This antenna will work, right?
Is it only the 211K receiver that will work with the monthly plan?
What do you think about buying one from ebay? The descriptions say that they do not come with a smartcard, but dish will provide one when we setup an account. Is this true or a scam?
Can I get network channels on dish? Are they local or regional? Does this cost more? We cannot get any over-air antenna signals where our camp is located.
Thanks so much for your help.

Panasonic 47" ET5 vs. 50" ST50

Hi all,

I'm buying a condo and my closing date is next month. My first major purchase is going to be a TV. I'm torn between two, however.

I've settled on Panasonic because the company I work for gets phenomenal discounts on Panasonic TVs. (ET5 is $1040 and the ST50 is $1120) and the reviews on each have been favorable. I know there's a checklist on the site but I've made one of my own because it suits my own needs.

There are a few factors weighing in to my decision, in no particular order:

1) Cost. Even though the difference is less than $100, at this point every dime I can save is important. Advantage: ET5

2) Passive 3D: I prefer passive 3D over active for many reasons. (lack of flickering and ease of use). I don't know how much I actually will take advantage of having 3D, but I like having it there. Advantage: ET5

3) Picture quality: I'm not a videophile, but I can have a trained eye when I want to. ST50 is known to provide high end picture for a mid-range price. ET5 has good picture but not mind-blowing. Part of that is Plasma vs. LED technology. Advantage: ST50

4) Value: ET5 comes with 4 pairs of glasses (although truly all you need to do is see a few 3D movies to get some from a theater). But ST50 has more features that enhance PQ and sound. The features on it are only offered on the high-end Panny LED's. Advantage: ST50

5) Energy efficiency: I originally justified getting the ST50 over an LED because the LEDs were more expensive (by a lot). Then I learned of the ET5. I'm thrifty (I guess you could call me cheap) and hate spending more on electric bills than I need to. EnergyGuide shows a $9/year difference in energy costs, but I know I'll be watching it more than 5 hours a day on some days. I do know from a wattage perspective, the LED uses at least twice as less wattage. Advantage: ET5

6) Size: Ideally I'd get a 55" but money is going to be tight once I close on this thing. I know 55" vs. 47" makes a huge difference but I only notice a small difference between 50" and 47". Still: advantage: ST50

So needless to say, I am very torn. Anyone have any advice?

For Sale - Now Even Cheaper!! GTX 580

So nobody has yet to buy my 580 that I will not need soon, and I fucking DEPLORE ebay. I would rather piss on something and then set it on fire before putting it up on eBay.

EVGA GTX 580 3GB VRAM:

Asking price was $300. Asking price is now $250 of Gamestop Points. Not $250 cash, but $250 GameStop money/points/whatever (one of my buddies runs some GameStop stores, lol).

Lemme give you the pros and cons of this card I have no need for once my 680 arrives.

Pros: It's a fucking 580. IMO the asking price is good.It runs TW2 EE@ 60 fps if you turn off Ubersampling (everything else you can max). The extra VRAM makes modded GTAIV run better.
Cons: There is no factory overclock. You have to overclock it yourselfOverclocking a GPU requires a Ph.D. in computer science.

My 680 ships May 16. Anyone interested, hit me up. :)

dumb satellite question

i know this is going to sound stupid, but here goes. i don't know a lot
about satellite t.v., so in my mind i imagine there is this satellite floating
in space shooting t.v. signals to people with dish t.v., what would happen if the satellite got blown up by like getting hit by space junk or something, would there be no more dish network until a new satellite was sent up?

Home Media Center HD-DVR confusion after talking to sales rep.

Can someone help me out. I have the HD-DVR20-100 and want to upgrade to HMC HD-DVR. I only have one TV connected and I don't want any more than this one TV connected. I Called DirecTV customer service to order and was told that I need to have "whole home service" and a tech needs to come out and hook up two lines. My current HD-DVR is connected wirelessly to the internet. Is this currect information? Can't I simply replace my 20-100 with the new HMC?
